Google Maps provides navigation services. They estimate drive times so you know when to leave to arrive on time.

It appears Google Map’s drive times assume and require you to speed to arrive on time.

For example here is a 95 mile drive which Google Maps estimates will take 81 mins. That’s an average of 70 mph, on a freeway with a 65mph speed limit.

What is going on here? Google Maps is assuming you will speed. Which means you must speed to arrive on time. The I-5 freeway in California, USA has a 65mph speed limit (except for a short section at 70mph and possible construction zones at 55mph). Google’s drive time includes getting on and off the freeway. Traveling 95 miles in 81 minutes is an average of 70mph.

Why it matters: By assuming that you will speed, Google Maps provides an estimated drive time that requires you to speed to arrive on time.
